APRIL 2008

MARCH 2008

I have just heard that RIC II Part 2 is now going to be published at the end of April. It is not a revised version, but will have new plates. As Spink say:

"The full revision of RIC II part 2 is a work in progress but in the immediate interests of maintaining the availability of the complete set, an improved volume is in preparation. This will be in the form of a straight reprint of the text from AD 96 - AD 138 with a new set of 48 plates."

FEBRUARY 2008

I have been appointed UK distributor for Victor "Tory" Failmezger's book, Roman Bronze Coins 294-364 AD, from Paganism to Christianity. During the seventy-year period covered by Roman Bronze Coins, Christian symbols on coins increased as that religion gradually replaced the traditional Roman gods as the official state religion. The book begins with the Emperor Diocletian’s empire-wide coin reform and his failure to establish price controls. It transitions into the fourth century where his successful reorganization of the Roman government paved the way for Constantine the Great’s thirty year rule that ushered the Christian transformation. This convenient, one-volume reference uses the humble bronze coin to trace that story and provide coin collectors several different ways to identify and catalog the coin. It is now available and will cost £29.95 plus postage and packing.

A review of the book can be found here.

Numismatic Forums

There are several discussion groups that specialise in numismatics. Unfortunately, our own coin forums service has been suspended for the forseeable future. One of my favourites for ancient coins is:

FORVM's Classical Numismatics Discussion Board

I hope to add further links to numismatic discussion groups as I find them. As ever your help is welcomed. Please let me know if you come across any good quality discussion groups.

Did you know?

The first numismatic book was published in 1514. It was called De Asse et Partibus Eius and was written by Guillaume Bude. First published in Paris, it ran to ten editions and several translations. Complete photographic facsimiles of several editions are now available online at the French National Library.
